For years photography and text have worked together to advertise, teach, etc, but they also work alone to propose a message. Text has been used for centuries to relay messages, but as time has gone by photography became capable of relaying these messages as well. But which does it better?
Text is used throughout everyday life. We are continuously reading articles, text messages, books, etc. Text can be used for many different things whether having a conversation with someone or informing you about events in life. It is important. Growing up, we were surrounded by books for pleasure and learning. Words created our picture.
Photography has become increasingly advanced and has become more than just a picture to look at. Photography has been developed to help educate, advertise, etc. The earliest illustrated storybook marketed as pleasure reading in English was A Little Pretty Pocket-Book from 1744 by John Newbery. Since then, picture books have been immensely produced. Books began being filmed as movies in 1896, one of the first sets of footage produced based on a novel was a 45 second scene of Trilby. The bestselling novel came out in 1895 and the full film was produced in 1915. As for advertising, advances in photography made it technologically and economically feasible for marketers to introduce a mixture of illustration and photography in print advertising in the 1920’s. Photography has been increasingly developing and is used by many through their everyday lives and has become important as well. Photography has played a large part in advertising, books, and education, bringing upon the question, is it more important than text?
Both text and photography are important and both serve many different purposes, some of the same. So which is more important, which relays the better message? Or are they equal in importance?
